Belgian traffic fine for a Dutch company: how to handle it

If your drivers drive in Belgium, Belgian fines will arrive sooner or later. They look different from a Dutch CJIB notice and have other senders and deadlines.

A speed camera in Antwerp, a parking fine in Ghent, speeding on the E19: Belgian fines for Dutch licence plates are collected as a matter of course. Through the European exchange of vehicle registration data Belgium identifies the Dutch registered keeper and sends the fine to the company.

Who sends the fine

  • Police or public prosecutor – for traffic offences such as speeding, red lights or phone use. You receive an immediate collection notice or a settlement proposal with a payment deadline.
  • The municipality – for GAS fines (municipal administrative sanctions), often for parking and stopping. Every municipality or GAS processor uses its own layout.
  • The lease company – if the car is leased, the fine arrives there first and is passed on, usually with an administration fee.

Dutch or French

The language depends on the region: Flanders sends in Dutch, Wallonia in French, Brussels bilingual. A fine from Namur or Liège is therefore in French, including the payment instructions.

Paying and deadlines

Pay within the deadline stated on the document, using the structured reference that comes with it. Paying late leads to a higher amount or a payment order. Because the fine reaches you via the registered keeper, and sometimes via the lease company, part of the deadline has often already passed.

Recharging to the driver

The same rules apply as for Dutch fines: agreements in advance, identify the right driver and collect transparently. Link the fine to the driver who was driving and send a payment request with the fine attached.

How Fleetfines helps

Fleetfines recognises the layouts of a growing number of Belgian municipalities and GAS processors, including Ghent, Leuven, Mechelen, Halle and Namur, and imports date, amount, plate and location automatically. French-language fines too. After that the fine runs like a CJIB fine: link, payment request, follow-up. See all supported Belgian municipalities.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Does a Dutch company have to pay a Belgian traffic fine?

Yes. Belgium identifies the Dutch registered keeper through European registration exchange and collects the fine. Not paying leads to an increase and further enforcement.

What is a GAS fine?

A municipal administrative sanction: a fine a Belgian municipality imposes itself, for example for parking or stopping. The municipality or a GAS processor sends it.

Does Fleetfines import French-language fines?

Yes. French-language fines, such as those from Namur, are recognised and imported automatically.
